For most of human history, people carried the past through stories. As those stories passed from one generation to the next, details disappeared, victories grew larger, failures became lessons, and human lives took on the shape of myth.

The Second Making of Gods imagines what might happen if the records of fourteen well-known lives were lost, leaving only the stories behind. Each chapter begins as a myth. Names, dates, nations, and technologies have been changed by generations of retelling. The facts remain beneath the surface, but they have been reshaped into the kind of stories people once told around fires.

Only near the end of each chapter does the familiar world begin to return. The myth gives way to history, and the person beneath the legend is finally named.
